Georgian Opportunity Fund Matching Gift Challenge

Greg Sutton '86, Georgian Opportunity Fund Matching Gift Donor

As a Legacy Dad, Greg Sutton ’86 has never hesitated to give back to his alma mater. So, when his former classmate and current Headmaster Stephen Beatty ’86 suggested that Greg take over the Georgian Opportunity Fund Matching Gift Challenge, he was more than happy to step up to the plate. For the past two years, it has been a grad family tradition to extend the opportunity for a deserving student to attend Royal St. George’s College who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. In 2018, the Stevenson Family offered to match each graduating family’s gift to the Georgian Opportunity Fund, up to $100,000. Together, they exceeded their goal and raised $231,288. In 2019, an anonymous graduating family offered up the challenge to match with a $100,000 gift, and together they raised $201,000. In 2020, despite difficult times for families because of the pandemic, the grad class raised $65,754.38. The Suttons still donated $100,000, for a total of $165,754.38. “I was really pleased to give at that level, regardless of how we ended up with the matching portion,” said Greg. “It would have been great to get to $100,000, but I’m still happy that we achieved what we did, and I look forward to helping out down the road as other opportunities come up.” Greg, who loves the school’s culture and close-knit community, feels very strongly about giving back to the College after both he and his son Jack, Class of 2020, had excellent experiences at 120 Howland. Now, he hopes his contribution can help another boy whose family isn’t as fortunate have the same excellent experience at RSGC. “I was really fortunate that my parents were able to send me to St. George’s, and we were fortunate to be able to do the same for our son. There are so many people who, for a variety of reasons, aren’t able to make it work, and it’s almost unfair that people can’t have the same experience for their sons,” said Greg. “It’s really important to help people have that experience, and it doesn’t take a lot of thought for me. I like to help people and, in a polite way, encourage other people do to so in any way. Knowing that you’re helping families who aren’t as fortunate is extremely rewarding.” The Georgian Opportunity Fund provides up to 100 per cent tuition support to deserving boys who otherwise would not have access to a Georgian education, as well as up to 100 per cent of uniform, books, school trips and extracurricular expenses, laptop, TTC fare, and daily lunch. The first student to attend the College through the Georgian Opportunity Fund graduated in 2020. There are currently five students at RSGC who otherwise wouldn’t be, thanks to the Georgian Opportunity Fund.
